However, just before the break, Liverpool found an opening through Cody Gakpo.

Not long after Manchester United had a goal ruled out by VAR, Gakpo found himself in space on the Reds’ left wing.

After the break Liverpool came out swinging and quickly had Manchester United up against the ropes.

Gakpo’s second and Liverpool’s third gave the hosts control of the match and the Red Devils heads went down.

He produced a delightful finish to wrap up the goal after a sweeping Liverpool counter.

Salah breaks Liverpool scoring record

Mohamed Salah got on the board in a fashion that might have been considered fortunate and his lashed right-footed shot moved him level with Robbie Fowler as Liverpool’s top-scorer.

Nunez completed his brace to get Liverpool up to five.

Salah’s second made it 6-0 and gave the Egyptian another Liverpool record.

Bobby Firmino rounded off the win with a cool finish that secured Liverpool their biggest ever win over Manchester United.

Salah savoured the record and breaking it at Anfield against Manchester United.

Long held goal

“I’m aware of the records, this one especially,” said Salah.

“For me it’s really special. When I came, after my first season I had like 31 goals and I was like, ‘I want to be the top scorer for Liverpool in the Premier League’. It’s something I am really chasing

“I have some good records at Liverpool. To be fair, as long as we achieve something with the team that’s the most important thing for me. I’m so happy and proud to break records and win trophies in a team like Liverpool. I don’t want to be in a smaller team and I’m the only one breaking records and that’s it.”

He added: “It would be nice to have the record in this big game especially against United. We know the relationship between United and Liverpool. Of course there is extra motivation but whoever scores (against United) I’m happy with it. Whenever the record comes I’ll be happy, but this game we just need to win because we want to be closer to the top four.

“It’s big because United at the moment are on a good run, winning almost every game and have a good squad and good players and the team has stability and confidence. We just need to play our game and try to enjoy and see.”
