Kaizer Chiefs: ‘I don’t care who says what but Itu Khune is one of the best!’

Khune is yet to keep a clean sheet this season as he has conceded 13 goals in seven league matches but he still has a fan.

Former Kaizer Chiefs dribbling wizard Junior Khanye has commended Gavin Hunt for retaining Itumeleng Khune in his starting line-up despite the goalkeeper recent loss of form.

Khune’s goalkeeping error led to AmaZulu finding the winner in Amakhosi’s 2-1 defeat on Wednesday, and all eyes were on Hunt to see if he would drop the veteran shot-stopper.

This after Hunt himself admitted he was concerned by his team’s goalkeeping department.

But the 56-year-old coach stuck with the former skipper, and some fans questioned Hunt’s decision before the game against SuperSport United only to eat humble pie as Khune produced a number of good saves in the 1-1 draw on Saturday.

While Khune couldn’t keep a clean sheet on the day as he conceded from the penalty spot, Khanye believes Hunt made the right call, adding that the 33-year-old remains one of the best goalkeepers in the country.

“For me, he [Hunt] did a good thing by bringing Khune back. He’s one of the best! I don’t care who says what,” Khanye told iDiskiTV.

“We saw glimpses [of his old form]. Yes, he conceded, it’s a fact, but from the penalty.

“The guy [Khune] did well. He saved them. If you check his positioning, it’s very good. I am very happy for me even though he conceded,” added Khanye.

Khune has been in and out of the Amakhosi team since the arrival of Daniel Akpeyi and this is due to his loss of form coupled with long-term injuries.

His performance against SuperSport United could go a long way in him reclaiming the No.1 jersey under the tutelage of Hunt in the remaining matches of the season.

It remains to be seen if Khune will start when Chiefs take on Horoya AC in the CAF Champions League on Tuesday. Kickoff for the encounter is scheduled for 6PM SA time.
