Real Sociedad have completed the signing of former Manchester City midfield maestro David Silva as a free agent, the LaLiga side confirmed in a statement.

The former 34-year-old Spanish World Cup winner left Manchester City after a decade of service in which he won 13 major trophies including four Premier League titles.

David Silva was reported to have agreed terms with Serie A side Lazio before Real Sociedad shockingly announced the signing of the playmaker until 2022.

David Silva signs for Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad confirmed the signing of David Silva on a two-year-deal as a free agent late on Monday night much to the surprise of Lazio fans.

“We are delighted to announce the signing of David Silva. The player joins Real as a free agent until June 30, 2022 #WelcomeDavid.” read a tweet from the official club account.

Lazio president furious

Lazio director Igli Tare has reacted angrily to David Silva’s move to Real Sociedad after the Spanish star reportedly agreed to join his side.

“I learn about David Silva’s transfer to Real Sociedad. I have great respect for the player, but not for the man.” Tare said.

Silva to receive a statue outside the Etihad stadium

The former Spain international joined Manchester City from Valencia in 2010 and went on to make 436 appearances and the club has since confirmed that a statue will be built outside their home stadium to honour his time at the club.

“David Silva is a transformational player, a quiet leader who has inspired everyone around him,” said City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak.

“David’s statue will act as a lasting reminder of the wonderful moments that he gave us, not only as an incredible footballer, but as an inspiring ambassador who represented this football club with great dignity at all times.”

The statue is set to be unveiled in 2021, along with another tribute dedicated to former City captain Vincent Kompany, who left the club last year.
