While Kaizer Chiefs have stormed into the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup, former defender Daniel Cardoso doesn’t believe the club is capable of winning silverware.

Cardoso left Amakhosi at the end of the previous season and he immediately found a home at Sekhuhkune United who are also in the Last Four of the cup competition.

Speaking to SABC Sport ahead of their DStv Premiership clash versus Chiefs, the veteran defender believes coach Arthur Zwane is onto something big at Naturena.

However, he argues that the Soweto giants cannot end their unwanted trophy drought as long as he is using youngsters.

The former Free State Stars player is the captain of Babina Nnoko and explained why the Glamour Boys are still in the rebuilding phase under the former winger, Zwane.

In his analysis, the 34-year-old stopper remained cautious of being too critical but said the club’s decision to get rid of seasoned campaigners might backfire.

Besides Cardoso, Amakhosi also released tried and tested players such as Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Bernard Parker at the end of last season.

“I don’t want to open up a can of worms, but youngsters are not going to win you titles and trophies,” said Cardoso, as quoted by SABC Sport.

“They are in a rebuilding phase, as you can see – (Samkelo) Zwane, (Mduduzi) Shabalala, (Happy) Mashiane, (Siyabonga) Ngezana…They got rid of all the experienced players.”

“Zwane has a good foundation going on there, but to win titles and trophies, I think you need far more experience, especially on the field.”

“I mean, they have quite a few experienced players sitting in the stands and at home. And I think that is what has been missed.”

Fresh from two wins across all competitions, Cardoso will be key for coach Brandon Truter’s side as they look to consolidate their top-eight spot. They welcome Chiefs at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon at 15:00.
