Why Akpeyi wants Komphela to stay ahead of Chiefs clash

Moroka Swallows keeper Daniel Akpeyi urges the club’s hierarchy to be patient with coach Steve Komphela and calls for him to stay, ahead of Kaizer Chiefs clash.

Akpeyi and Swllows teammates are preparing his former club, Chiefs in the DStv Premiership this weekend.

Just like Akpeyi, Komphela will also face his former employers, Chiefs and he will look to bag a win against a lukewarm Amakhosi.

Chiefs are licking their wounds from the 1-0 defeat in the Soweto Derby, a loss they suffered against Orlando Pirates ahead of the recent FIFA International break.

WHY AKPEYI WANTS KOMPHELA TO STAY AHEAD OF CHIEFS CLASH

The big Nigeria international will be key when Swallows face Chiefs at home in the league as they will look to maintain their fine run.

Under Komphela, the Dube Birds sit fifth on the log and have collected 18 points from 10 matches compared to Chiefs who have 14 from 12 matches – they are blowing hot and cold.

“If you look around the structures that every team plays or most teams play in the world right now, this whole idea came from Pep Guardiola, I think,” said Akpeyi per SABC Sport.

“It’s basically we wanna play from the back and we’ll work on it day after day, session after session to make sure that we perfect it. Well, it’s expected that hiccups are gonna happen.”

SWALLOWS KEEPER ON KOMPHELA’S PHILOSOPHY VS. CHIEFS

The former Chippa United and Chiefs gloveman says their mission is to keep going no matter who they meet on the field of play.

He adds that the Dobsonville-based side has no reason to deviate from Komphela’s instructions and philosophy.

“So, we never stop no matter how hard you try to press us, we still keep going,” Akpeyi adds.

“So, it’s the confidence the coach has built in us. Working on the field and working outside are two different things.

“So, I understand from the chairman’s perspective but we just have to do our job.”

He also talked about coach Cavin Johnson’s troops, saying facing a struggling team will be a challenge.

“Playing a team that is kind of struggling is a difficult one to play,” continues the keeper.

“It’s not gonna be an easy one on Sunday because they are looking for points everywhere, we are looking to sustain our position on the log.

“So, this is gonna be the case of two lions fighting. We are already expecting what is to come on that day and we are prepared for it.”
