Chiefs down CT City to reach MTN8 semi-finals

Edson Castillo was the hero of the day as he guided Kaizer Chiefs to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Cape Town City in the MTN8 in Athlone on Sunday.

MTN8 QUARTER-FINAL RECAP

In a fast-paced encounter between the sides, the Glamour Boys made all the right moves at the start of the clash, but they failed to make the most of their opportunities.

And that came back to haunt them as the home side took the lead in the 24th minute when Marc van Heerden headed in an enticing cross from a corner kick. Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen did clear the shot away, an upon further review the assistant referee ruled that the ball had crossed the line and therefore the goal stood.

But the Citizens’ high line was eventually punished with about 10 minutes before the half-time break when Ashley du Preez fired home from close quarters after running onto a sublime through pass from Mduduzi Mdantsane.

The second half was a closely fought affair, with the Citizens and the Glamour Boys creating multiple scoring opportunities. But the glory fell on Castillo who scored via a sweetly struck volley in stoppage time to hand Chiefs the win.
