The draw for the latter stages of the Champions League took place in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday giving us the quarterfinal fixtures and the brackets for semi-final progression.

Should Liverpool and Manchester United progress to the semi-final’s the fierce rivals will meet over two legs for a place in the Champions League final.

Four of the eight sides left in the draw hail from the Premier League in the first display of English dominance in the competition in ten years. That set up the likelihood that at least one of the last eight matches could be an all-English affair. Five countries are represented in the last eight with single representatives from the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Italy joining the English core.

Of the remaining teams only Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have never won European club football’s top prize.

The first name drawn from the pot was that of Ajax Amsterdam who will play at home in the first leg of their quarterfinal against Juventus who were drawn second.

Liverpool were drawn third earning a home first leg due to that position and their opponents will be two time winners FC Porto.

Spurs also earned a home first leg by being picked fifth and the pots set up an English derby as Manchester City came out of the draw next.

That left Barcelona and Manchester United and despite the order of the draw.

The winner of the Spurs/City quarterfinal will play at home in the first leg of the semi-final facing the winners of the Ajax vs Juventus tie.

United or Barca will play at home in the first leg in the last four against either Liverpool or Porto.
