Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has made his intentions for the second half of the season crystal clear – his team needs consistent wins. After a below-average start to the season, the Buccaneers are determined to improve and reclaim their spot in the CAF Champions League.

The club’s recent 6-0 victory over CrystalLake in the Nedbank Cup offers hope, but they’ll need to transfer that momentum into their DStv Premiership campaign. Currently sitting in fifth place, Pirates are 13 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and desperately need to start racking up points.

Riveiro Wants to See Pirates’ Winning Spirit

“We don’t have the luxury to drop points,” said Riveiro. “We want to at least finish in second position so that we can play continental football next season.”

The Pirates coach aims to replicate the team’s strong finish from last season, which saw them secure second place and win the Nedbank Cup. A key factor in their success will be improved consistency – a challenge they’ll be tested on when they face Polokwane City on Saturday.

Resilience – On and Off the Pitch

Despite a turbulent start to the season, the Pirates have consistently shown resilience and the ability to bounce back. The club’s in-house documentaries offer insight into the team’s strong bond, with players supporting each other through personal tragedies.

Riveiro emphasizes this sense of brotherhood, saying: “We are not friends, but we are brothers – which is something stronger.”

This unity was evident even when playing with one man down against Sundowns. Now, Pirates must maintain this momentum as they face a demanding March schedule including games against Cape Town Spurs, Kaizer Chiefs, and Sekhukhune United, as well as Nedbank Cup fixtures.

Squad Depth Key for Pirates’ Success

The club’s depth will be crucial in the coming months, and Riveiro was pleased to see fringe players like Thalente Mbatha seize opportunities.

With focused determination and continued improvement, the Orlando Pirates have the potential to turn their season around and reclaim their place amongst the continent’s best.
