Orlando Pirates suffered a shock 1-0 defeat against Jwaneng Galaxy in the first leg of their Caf Champions League second preliminary round tie on Sunday afternoon.

The Buccaneers became the first South African side to ever lose a match to Botswana opposition in any of the annual African club competitions. In 2010, Pirates were eliminated from the CAF Champions League by Gaborone United after the two sides played out to a 2-2 draw.

Jwaneng coach Morena Ramoreboli delivered another tactical masterpiece against Pirates this time with the Botswana champions. Ten years ago, Ramoreboli’s Maluti FET College defeated the Sea Robbers 4-1 in the Nedbank Cup in what was one of the biggest upsets in South African football history.

On Sunday, the former Bafana Bafana interim coach again created history when he led Galaxy to a 1-0 win over Orlando Pirates at the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone.

Pirates now need to win the second leg at Orlando on September 29 by a two-goal cushion to remain in the Champions League. Anything less could see them dumped off of the tournament.

Orlando Pirates next face PSL log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday evening as they look to bounce back from defeat.
