AmaZulu vs Horoya: Benni McCarthy’s men record narrow win!

AmaZulu registered their first three points of the CAF Champions League group stages with a narrow 1-0 win over Horoya AC on Friday.

AmaZulu registered their first three points of the CAF Champions League group stages with a narrow 1-0 win over Horoya AC on Friday.

Luvuyo Memela scored the only goal of the game with a cheeky back heel in the first half, and that proved to be the difference on the night.

Usuthu started on the front foot with Tapelo Xoki connected with Keagan Buchanan’s cross into the box but the former’s header went over the crossbar.

AmaZulu took control of the game, and they were duly rewarded in the 30th minute when Memela found the back of the net from an Augustine Mulenga cross.

New signing Abraham Majok had two big chances minutes before the interval after Mulenga had done all the hard work from deep.

Horoya only started playing at the start of the second half as they had a few big goalscoring chances with Boniface Haba hitting the crossbar before Pape Ndiaye failed to score from the rebound.

McCarthy made a double substitution midway through the game, introducing Thabo Qalinge and Metarr Ceesay for Majok and Xola Mlambo respectively.

Sebe Baffour had his free-kick palmed away from danger by Veli Mothwa six minutes from time after some relentless pressure from Horoya.

That proved to the last goalscoring chance for Horoya as Usuthu held on to register their first ever group stage win and moved to three points.

AmaZulu’s next assignment is against ES Setif next week where they will be looking to take control of the log.
