Lyle Foster is the priciest South African footballer of all time after being officially unveiled by Burnley. He’s shattered a long-standing record belonging to Steven Pienaar, who switched from Everton to Tottenham for €3.6m (R67.6 million) in 2011.

OPINION: Why Bafana Bafana desperately needs Foster

LYLE FOSTER OBLITERATES A LONG-STANDING RECORD

Up until today, Steven Pienaar was the most expensive South African footballer ever. The Joburg-born playmaker’s 2011 move from Everton to Tottenham fetched a fee of €3.6m (R67.6 million). The guaranteed fee that Burnley will pay to Westerlo for Kyle Foster’s services has shattered this record. The Clarets, looking good in their Premier League promotion chase, have sealed a deal for Foster worth €7m upfront, with a further €3m of add-ons directly related to whether they gain promotion to the EPL. If they succeed, Foster will move for a staggering R187.7 million. That’s almost TREBLE the fee for Pienaar some 12 years ago.

Burnley won’t be even the slightest bit annoyed if they have to cough up that extra €3m because it’ll mean they’re back in the big time. Mzansi football fans, are you keen to see Foster plying his trade in the Premier League next season?
