Banyana Banyana players to pocket R1.1 million each after historic win! 

Banyana Banyana were finally able to get one over the line in World Cup football, after a hard fought 3-2 win over Italy on Wednesday morning.

Banyana Banyana were finally able to get one over the line in World Cup football, after a hard fought 3-2 win over Italy on Wednesday morning.

It was not a good start for Banyana Banyana, after conceding a penalty to Italy within the first five minutes of the game. They were able to claw themselves back for a victory in the end.

Banyana Banyana needed a helping hand from the Italians, to equalise, with the absent captain, Refiloe Jane’s Sassuolo teammate Benedetta Orsi scoring an own goal. After that, lethal forward Hildah Magaia had millions of South African citizens dreaming, when she gave Desiree Ellis’ charges the lead for the first time in the game. Like has been a pattern throughout their campaign, the African Queens could not hold on to their lead and conceded from a set piece.

But in the dying minutes of the game, Magaia and Thembi Kgatlana would combine again, with Kgatlana finding the back of the net from a well worked Magaia cross. That victory saw the Banyana Banyana side have to negotiate a tricky ending to the game, which saw a brilliant match saving one on one stop from goalkeeper Kaylin Swarts. In the end, they held out and qualified as second on the group, with their first ever victory at the World Cup culminating in their first ever qualification into the knockout stages of the tournament. 

Banyana Banyana players to receive R1.1 million for reaching last round of 16

Now having clinched that qualification into the last round of 16, the players are set to be rewarded handsomely for their efforts. This is because, due to the tournament rules, a getting yourself into the last round of 16 earns your R1.1 million rand each.

The players will now shift their focus to a massive fixture against the Netherlands, which will be played on Sunday at 4 am South African time.
