English Championship outfit Brentford have extended the contract of South African midfielder Kamohelo Mokotjo, just days before his current deal was set to expire.

The 29-year-old has been at the club since switching from Dutch outfit, FC Twente in 2017.

Brentford’s “General” extends stay

He has penned a new deal, along with Greek striker Nikos Karelis.

The club announced the contract extension on Thursday afternoon.

“We are very pleased to extend Kamohelo’s contract. He has worked very hard to come back from his injury and will be ready and fit for selection against Fulham,” Brentford coach, Thomas Frank said. “We need The General’s experience, coolness and passing ability as we head into the last part of the season. He is so reliable and adds so much to the group, both in training and matches. You can see when he steps onto the pitch how it raises the levels of those around him.”

Premier League beckons Bafana’s Kamohelo Mokotjo

Mokotjo’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of June, and the extension comes just in time for the club’s clash against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

The Bees are well within a shot of promotion into the Premiership, having worked their way to a playoff spot, where they sit in fourth place behind the table-topping Leeds United, who are closely followed by West Bromwich Albion and Fulham.

Should his club gain promotion into the big time, Mokotjo will join Leicester City’s Khanya Leshabela – who was promoted to the first team ahead of the ongoing season but is yet to make a debut for Brendan Rodgers’ side – as one of two South Africans in the Premier League, with Percy Tau also due back from a spell with Belgian champions Club Brugge, where he was loaned out by relegation-threatened Brighton and Hove Albion.

Mokotjo has made a total of 24 appearances for Brentford this season, with a single goal and two assist.

He has represented South Africa 13 times since making his debut against Mozambique in September 2011.
