Bafana Bafana returned to action on Tuesday afternoon when they travelled to face Rwanda in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualification clash.

South Africa were drawn alongside Benin, Lesotho, Nigeria, Rwanda and Zimbabwe in group C.

Hugo Broos’ side picked up a crucial 2-1 victory over Benin in their opening match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Rwanda started like a house on fire putting the South African defence under serious pressure early on. They were rewarded for their pressure in the 12th minute when Innocent Nshuti gave them the lead with a well taken finish.

The hosts had a number of opportunities to double their lead and they finally did so in the 28th minute after Gilbert Mugisha capitalised on a shocking Khuliso Mudau error. Watch the goal below.

At the time of posting, the scoreline read 2-0 in favour of the hosts after 36 minutes of play against Bafana.

“People are always talking about rankings, this is a big and that, you know every game against those teams is difficult. You saw Lesotho’s result. They’ve never had so much big defeats.” Bafana head coach Hugo Broos said as quoted by TimesLive.

“When they lose a game is 1-0 or 2-1 but not 6-0 like I saw in the game between Egypt and Djibouti, 6-0. You see that with those teams (like Lesotho). That means they’re tough games and we know that it will be a tough game on the other side (for Bafana against Benin).

“I always said that this was not the worst but a tricky group.”
