Bafana Bafana crashed out of AFCON after a penalty shootout defeat to Nigeria. However, it’s not all doom and gloom with plenty of valuable lessons to study.

Three things we learned as Bafana Bafana bowed out of AFCON

You’ve got to take your chances in a semi-final

South Africa could and possibly should have been over the hill and far away at halftime against the Super Eagles. The major culprit in that regard, and it’s awful to single out individuals, was Percy Tau. The Al Ahly man had two gilt-edged chances to score but hit one of his shots tamely into the arms of Stanley Nwabali and then when he raced through on goal moments later, a heavy first touch meant the Chippa goalkeeper could easily come and gather. It’s perhaps time to move on from Percy Tau but that’s another topic entirely.

This team can compete at the highest level again

A first AFCON semi-final appearance in 20 years is an impressive feat in itself. However, it’s also indicative of this team’s newfound confidence on the grand stage. There’s no reason why Bafana can’t have a proper crack at World Cup qualification in 2026. There’s nobody to fear on the African continent.

South Africa boasts a promising, balanced core

Skipper Ronwen Williams is at the peak of his powers as a goalkeeper aged 32, while 27-year-old Teboho Mokoena can be the fulcrum of this side for a few years still. Beyond them, there’s also an exciting sprinkling of youth in the mix. Mihlali Mayambela has the raw ingredients to add real value, as does Evidence Makgopa, while Bongokuhle Hlongwane must surely be included in future Bafana groups. His prolific record in the USA is too good to ignore.
