Many South African fans have taken hostility towards Ghana since their dubious penalty win over Bafana Bafana in 2021.

The Black Stars edged out Bafana 1-0 after a biased officiating from match referee during the 2022 World Cup qualifying match. Hugo Broos’ team needed a win or draw to progress to the second round of qualifying but Ghana’s win saw them go through and beat Nigeria in the second round to secure a spot at the 2022 World Cup.

The South African Football Association (Safa) tried to get FIFA to intervene and have the game replayed but their case was dismissed. Ghana on the otherhand, felt they deserved the win and even blasted Safa.

The two teams(Ghana and Uruguay) faced off with a place in the last 16 at stake and the match revived memories of a thrilling encounter from 2010 where Ghana were denied a place in the semi-finals after Luis Suarez’s handball.

Bafana’s ‘beef’ with Ghana still going strong

A penalty was awarded to Ghana in the last seconds of extra-time when Suarez kept out what looked like the winning goal. Black Stars legend Asamoah Gyan stepped up but failed to convert and the match was forced into penalties.

Uruguay won 4-2 on penalties to break the hearts of many Africans in 2010.

On Sunday, Ghana lost 2-1 to Cape Verde in their opening African Cup of Nations and Bafana fans rejoiced on social media after the game.
