Bafana Bafana are set for a massive pay day if they can progress all the way to the Afcon title, which suddenly seems to be a real prospect.

Bafana Bafana have ignited renewed hope in South Africa that they could reclaim former glory and achieve what would be a famous charge to the Afcon title.

Earlier this week Bafana Bafana beat Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) favourites Morocco 2-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the event at Stade Laurent Pokou, and now have a date set with Cape Verde.

That clash will kick off at 10pm (SA time) on Saturday.

There is every chance that Bafana could progress to the final four, and from there anything could be possible.

It’s worth keeping in mind that before the tournament started there was a significant increase in prize money, with the winner set to claim around R131 million.

Bafana have already banked R24.4 million, but an even bigger pay day could be on the horizon.

An increase to note

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe highlighted the following increase prior to Afcon kick off.

“CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the Prize Money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions,” Motsepe said.

“We have increased the Prize Money of the AFCON Winner to USD 7 000 000 which is a 40% increase from the previous AFCON Prize Money.

“I am confident that a portion of the Prize Money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our Member Associations with their administrations.”
