Ghana out of Afcon, coach fired and Bafana fans celebrate their fall

“We South Africans support any team that plays against Ghana. Even if they play alone, we’ll support the Stadium,” Bafana fans react.

The Black Stars of Ghana have crashed out of the African Cup of Nations following their 2-2 draw with Mozambique mon Monday.

The 2015 Afcon finalists needed to win to qualify but squandered a 2-0 lead.

After the defeat, Chris Hughton was fired on Tuesday as coach of Ghana, the country’s football association said in a statement.

The Black Stars finished third in Group B at the tournament iand any outside hope they had of a place in the last 16 as one of the four best third-placed finishers ended on Tuesday with results in Groups C and D.

This is the second successive Afcon that Ghana were eliminated in the group stages.

“The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior national team with immediate effect. The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars,” said a statement.

“The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars,” it added.

After the Black Stars elimination, some Bafana Bafana fans took to social media to celebrate the team’s downfall.

Many South African fans have taken hostility towards Ghana since their dubious penalty win over Bafana Bafana in 2021.

The Black Stars edged out Bafana 1-0 after a biased officiating from match referee during the 2022 World Cup qualifying match. Hugo Broos’ team needed a win or draw to progress to the second round of qualifying but Ghana’s win saw them go through and beat Nigeria in the second round to secure a spot at the 2022 World Cup.
