Bafana bonuses: When will players get paid?

Bafana’s AFCON bonuses remain in question. SAFA reveals the payment timeline and what else the prize money might fund.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has issued a statement to clarify the situation regarding bonus payments for the Bafana Bafana team.

Their strong performance at the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, securing a third-place finish, prompted questions about their remuneration.

Bafana Bafana: Bonuses Predetermined

In a statement, SAFA confirmed that a bonus agreement was reached and signed between the players and the football association prior to the AFCON tournament.

This agreement outlines payments contingent on the team’s performance, though the specific figures remain confidential.

Awaiting CAF Payout

SAFA clarified that bonus payments to Bafana Bafana players will be processed immediately upon receiving the allocated funds from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

“We as SAFA account to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the money that is awarded by the continental body,” the statement explained.

Investing in South African Football

While a portion of the prize money is set aside for player bonuses, SAFA assures the public that remaining funds will be used to further the development of football within South Africa.

The organization reiterated, “the funds are not intended for members of the national executive committee of the association or any SAFA staff”.

Bafana Bafana: Payment Process Explained

SAFA’s Chief Financial Officer (Gronie Hluyo) will be responsible for directly depositing bonuses into the Bafana Bafana players’ bank accounts as soon as CAF releases the funds.

CEO Lydia Monyepao will supervise the payment process and ensure accountability to CAF regarding the use of the allocated prize money.
