Before the Al Ahly and Bafana star took the penalty, it looked like Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Mokoena was ready to take it – Broos explains the situation.

Broos says there are three penalty-takers in the Bafana squad and they decide on the pitch who will step up after Tau missed a spot-kick against the Eagles.

BAFANA AND BROOS TURN THEIR FOCUS TO NAMIBIA

In their next match of the group, Bafana have a date against neighbours Namibia who are in high spirits after beating Tunisia on the same day.

In addition, the Bafana coach Broos now insists the missed penalty and the added physicality of Mali after the break decided the game on the night.

“I have to congratulate my team for the performance of today,” adds Broos.

“I think we lose the game in two facts, first is missing the penalty. Secondly is the physical power, especially in the second half of Mali.

“Those reasons made us lose the game today but the performance of South Africa was good and I think if we scored the penalty the game would have been different.”
