Bafana skipper Williams worried about poor fan attendance

Ahead of the international friendly clash against Eswatini, worried Bafana Bafana skipper Ronwen Williams calls on SAFA to work and curb poor fan attendance.

Williams says it hurts to play in an empty stadium and Bafana deserves better when it comes to bringing fans to the stadium.

Bafana will meet their Southern African neighbours, eSwatini at FNB Stadium on Friday evening and Williams raises concerns about poor fan attendance.

BAFANA SKIPPER WORRIED ABOUT POOR FAN ATTENDANCE

The Mamelodi Sundowns number one keeper, Williams looked back at their friendly against DR Congo last month where the Congolese enjoyed more support at the same venue.

Despite Bafana having qualified for the upcoming 2023 AFCON tournament, fans seem to drag their feet to the stadium.

At the same time, some fans are urging SAFA to spread Bafana matches to different venues and not always host them in Gauteng.

“Obviously it’s not nice, we don’t enjoy playing in front of empty stadiums. It doesn’t give a good taste and we don’t get a good vibe,” Williams said per FARPost.

“Like I said in my previous press conference, maybe we need to do more as the association and as the team.

“I remember before we used to go to malls and schools to give back [to the community]. The fans now feel like there’s no link between the two of us, they just see us on the field.”

The former SuperSport United net minder and skipper, Williams shares advice to SAFA in an aim to bring more supporters to the stands.

With the Gqeberha-born gloveman having featured for Sundowns in a sold-out MTN8 final against Pirates last weekend, he is worried about empty stands on Friday.

“So maybe we need to do more as a team and the association to put us out there. We go around malls, signing off autographs and getting to know each other on a personal level,” he adds.

“And it started last month when we went to a school in Soweto. Hopefully, we can do more of that to get supporters behind us again.”
