Amajimbos thumped 5-0 by Senegal in AFCON quarter-finals

Amajimbos crashed out of the Afcon by Senegal after a 5-0 defeat on Wednesday.

South Africa’s Under-17 side conceded two first half own goals in quick succession from centre backs Waylon Renecke and Benjamin Wallace.

Amajimbos started the match on a positive note but in the 36th minute, Renecke scored an own goal to give the Senegalese the led. Renecke attempted to clear the ball but his miscued effored found the back of the net.

Just before half-time, Duncan Crowie’s charges went to sleep again and allowed Mamadou Sadio to give Senegals a 3-0 lead.

Two own goals gave Senegal the momentum

Amajimbos were in sixes and sevens in the second half and were punished by Senegal skipper Amara Diouf.

The young captain scored a brace with goals in the 55th and 71st minutes to give the West African side an emphatic 5-0 victory at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers.

The South African under-17 men’s national team narrowly qualified for the quarter-finals even after their defeat to Nigeria in their last group game. Crowie’s troops had to rely on Burkina Faso to beat Cameroon.

Burkina Faso came from a goal down to defeat the Cameroonians 2-1 which allowed Duncan Crowie side to qualify for the next round as one of the two best ranked third teams alongside Congo.

Amajimbos faced a huge task against tournament favourites Senegal

It’s back to the drawing board now for Amajimbos as they have now failed to qualify for the U/17 FIFA World Cup.

Both the SA Under-20 and Under-23 side failed to qualify for their own AFCON tournaments and that should be a concern for the South African Football Association.
