Striker Percy Tau says that Bafana Bafana must reach the Africa Cup of Nations and failure to do so would be deemed a disaster.

Bafana are currently second in their group with crunch matches against log-leaders Ghana and Sudan coming up in the international window.

Bafana Bafana must qualify for Afcon – Percy Tau

South Africa will face the Black Stars of Ghana at home before jetting off to Khartoum to take on Sudan, who will be eager to make up ground when they face group whipping boys São Tomé and Príncipe on matchday five.

Victory over Ghana will put Bafana Bafana in a position where they need only draw their final game against Sudan.

A big job

Tau said in a recent interview that Bafana Bafana were aware of the enormity of the task facing them but were positive about getting the results they need.

“We all know if one loses and another one wins, the winner gains an advantage to go to Afcon, but I am confident that we will work hard and we should get the all-important result. We also want to use the home ground advantage we have over Ghana and do better than we did against them in the away game.

‘’We watched the videos of that game in which we lost 2-0 and saw what we did wrong. We hope we are in a very good frame of mind and that we will do well. We have been in these situations so many times and our main focus is just go there, do well and qualify for Afcon.”

Percy Tau in the ranks

Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki needed to implore Brighton to release his star player for the qualifiers with concerns over quarantine periods raised by many European clubs.

Tau believes that the qualifying campaign isn’t about him though but the collective effort of all in the national team squad.

‘’No, no, I believe whatever we intend to achieve, we must do it as a collective. When I am given the responsibility, I share it with my teammates, we all share responsibilities to try and help the team to qualify. We share the pressure as a team, but as I said, the ultimate prize is qualification.”

SAFA

Tau thanked South African fans for their ongoing support including the army of backers he enjoys on social media, putting pressure on his club to give him his due.

Tau said: ‘’I appreciate their support and must continue to do so with love. I would also want everyone to be safe out there during this pandemic, take measures to stay safe and remain healthy. These are the people who make us who we are and I really appreciate their love and I am glad my work has always made them proud.”
