Eddie Jones recently took up a new job with Japan after a disastrous stint at the helm at the Wallabies which ended with a pool stage exit at the World Cup.

Amidst a variety of strange incidents during his time with Australia, a sneak peek of Stan Sport‘s feature, The Wallabies: Inside Rugby World Cup 2023 documentary shows a very odd interaction with players.

The never-before-seen footage captures Jones brandishing a cattle prod during a team camp, warning players, “If you can’t run fast, I’ve got this – the cattle prodder. Bang!”

The short clip doesn’t provide context as to whether it was a serious threat or just in jest, but seeing Jones with the ‘cattle prod’ in hand will certainly raise eyebrows.

The documentary also revisits his fiery airport press conference in 2023, where he berated reporters as the Wallabies prepared to fly out for the World Cup in France.

Jones took a wild swipe at the gathered media, accusing them of unnecessary negativity as he provided a host of sarcastic answers before suggesting it had been the ‘worst press conference of his life’.

Following that bizarre interaction, he refused to take a backward step as he termed his tirade as a “bit of fun”.

“We’ve got to look after our team, we’ve got a young group of players and we want them to feel like there’s people behind them,” he said.

“I never have any regrets. I try to just be as honest as I can, be honest with my feelings and emotions and that’s how I felt at that time.”

With the Wallabies coming under pressure after a series of losses, the veteran coach had the following to say when he told the media off.

“I know what’s wrong with Australian rugby and you blokes are part of the problem because you’re so bloody negative about everything,” Jones said. “We’re going off to a World Cup you think we can’t win, you think the selection process is bad because the players complain…

“We’re terrible. You know we’re terrible. Just tell us we’re terrible and we’ll prove you wrong.”

He added that “I’ve got to wash myself off (due to the negativity), it’s sticking to me”.

“Thanks for the worst press conference I’ve had in world rugby,” he concluded. “That is the worst I’ve ever seen. “You ought to give yourselves uppercuts, boys, fair dinkum.”

Last year, Jones was also involved in an altercation with a well-known South African journalist, who simply asked Jones if the sentiment of wanting to face a full-strength Springbok side had perhaps turned to relief after losing by 31 points during the opening Rugby Championship game.

Jones ultimately responded by telling the journalist not to be a “smart arse”, while he repeated those words when he left the press conference room and suggested the question had been disrespectful.
