Varsity Shield set for all-Cape final between UWC and CPUT

The 2023 Varsity Shield title will be contested by provincial rivals UWC and CPUT, after both Cape Town sides won their respective semi-final clashes on Thursday.

UWC and CPUT finished first and third in the Varsity Shield standings, respectively, following the conclusion of the round-robin phase of the competition.

That meant UWC would play a home semi-final against the defending champions UFH, while CPUT had to travel to for their last four clash against the NMU Madibaz.

UWC claimed an emphatic 39-13 win over UFH and CPUT stormed a 44-5 victory over the ill-disciplined Madibaz, who at one stage had five people in the sin bin.

UWC and CPUT will now jostle things out in the first-ever Varsity Shield final featuring both Bellville sides. 

The championship match is scheduled to take place next Thursday with kick off set for 7pm.
