Highly-rated Maties centre Waqar Solaan lived up to his reputation when he scored this brilliant solo try in their comeback win over NWU in the Varsity Cup on Monday.
Maties overcame a ten-point deficit at halftime to beat the NWU Eagles 31-28 in Potchefstroom to get their 2023 Varsity Cup campaign back on track.
Three first half tries by the NWU Eagles and three penalties by Maties flyhalf Jurie Mattheetook, saw the hosts take a handy 19-9 lead at at half-time.
Maties came back firing on all cylinders in the second half to complete the remarkable comeback.
The comeback was sparked by a beautiful individual try from Solaan, who latched onto a pass from the ruck in midfield, put his head down and ran straight through the Eagles defence to score.

After three rounds of Varsity Cup action there are NO unbeaten teams – and just UP-Tuks are still searching for their first win of the tournament.
Monday, 6 March’s matches saw CUT build on their upset win over Maties with another victory over bottom side UP-Tuks.

Maties, who had been disappointing to date, upset top-of-the-log NWU Eagles on the road, while there were home wins for UJ over UCT Ikeys and UFS Shimlas over Wits.
