It may have been the greatest comeback in rugby history – let alone Varsity Cup history.
In the 74th minute of the 2014 final, it looked like former Springbok scrumhalf Robert du Preez had led his NWU-Pukke side to a comprehensive victory with the men from Potchefstroom ahead 33-15.
Then the unthinkable happened.
Not once, not twice, but three times!
The never-say-die UCT Ikeys scored a hat-trick of tries in the remaining minutes to snatch the Varsity Cup trophy with a 39-33 victory.
Fast forward 10 years and the men from the Cape are back in the final on Monday, 22 April.
This time they will be up against UFS Shimlas at Shimla Park.
Kick-off is at 19:00.
The UCT Ikeys will be looking for a third Varsity Cup title, while UFS Shimlas are seeking a second success.
For interest’s sake, UCT beat 38-32 Shimlas in Bloemfontein in the opening round of this year’s tournament.
