The Challenge Cup has become the big focus for the Sharks this season but wins in the United Rugby Championship play their part in coach John Plumtree’s plan.

Edinburgh and Ulster have come to Kings Park and left with nought for their efforts as the Sharks turn around a horror run in the competition.

Sharks set their sights on Challenge Cup run

The Sharks won’t be able to reach the URC playoffs but can still claim silverware in the Challenge Cup.

Zebre come to Kings Park next week for a Challenge Cup knockout match and Plumtree is happy to the confidence returning to his side

“It’s a big thing for us, the confidence – you can’t underestimate it in sport. We are working hard, and the leaders are keeping everyone grounded. We know what next week means to us,” Plumtree said after the win over Edinburgh.

“It was crucial to build confidence. We know we have a good squad, we have everyone back and the majority of the squad is fit.

“That’s what we needed to create that competition that I have been talking about. The players are being well-led, and we have a bit of momentum going into an important part of the season for us.”

Coach admits the need to be more ruthless

Plumtree admitted that the Sharks could do with sharpening up when close to the line.

“There’s always going to be something to work on,” said Plumtree.

“It’s always nice to have something to build on. We have to look at why we are not nailing those moments. When we crossed the line a couple of times we were held up, so there’s not a lot we can do about that.”

Eben Etzebeth out of Sharks clash with Zebre

Plumtree doubts that Eben Etzebeth will be fit to face Zebre. The Springbok star suffered a rib injury against Edinburgh.

The coach feels that a best case scenario for Eztebeth would still involve at least two weeks out of action.

“We don’t know yet, he’ll need a scan. We are hoping that it’s just cartilage. If that’s the case he could be out two to three weeks. He’s probably sore but again we’ll have a look at that,” Plumtree said.

The Sharks won three of their four Challenge Cup group matches and finished on top of their section earning them a home match in the first knockout round.
