Sharks halfback Sanele Nohamba has reportedly agreed a move to Ellis Park and the Lions in a bid for more time on the park.

Nohamba, who had been in the Springbok picture before the pandemic hit, has recently slipped down the pecking order at the Sharks.

Nohamba moves from Sharks to Lions

Jaden Hendrikse’s excellent form has made it hard for Nohamba to get into the starting XV while Cameron Wright has also done consistently well.

According to Afrikaans language newspaper Rapport, Nohamba has agreed a deal that will keep him at the Lions for at least three years.

Nohamba was invited to a Springbok alignment camp in the lead up to the 2021 British and Irish Lions series but would not make any of the Test match squads and has yet to debut in green and gold.

However, even with Currie Cup action on the go parallel to the United Rugby Championship, the Sharks have found little use for Nohamba.

The Lions have two strong choices at nine at the moment with Morne van den Berg’s exciting talent on show alongside the seasoned Andre Warner and Nico Steyn.

In the Lions squad, there are fewer internationals competing for places with the franchise having the fewest Springboks on their books.

Growing with the pride of Joburg

However, there is certainly space for a young player like Nohamba to learn and grow under the guidance of a settled coaching staff.

The Lions are the lowest-ranked South African team in the URC currently occupying the 12th spot on the 16-team log.

In the Currie Cup, the Lions are currently dead last having lost all eight of their matches so far.

The Sharks beat table-topping Leinster to move into the top four of the URC table with two rounds to go in the round-robin phase.
