Amidst all of diverse and unifying scenes that have resulted from the Springboks’ success at the World Cup, one man – EFF leader Julius Malema – has stepped up to spread anti-Springbok messaging that has again raised eyebrows.

Malema waded into a tired old debate when he suggested that the Springboks name and branding was an ‘apartheid symbol’, while insisting the team should get a new name.

WHAT ELSE MALEMA HAD TO SAY

Part of Malema’s long-winded rant included him saying: “WE DON’T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH RUGBY. WE LOVE RUGBY, but we don’t love Mabokoboko. MABOKOBOKO is an Afrikaner pride, it’s an Afrikaner property – that is why the President of the Afrikaners, Johann Rupert, received amaBokoboko.”

“Rugby is not a White Man’s sport. They found it here… I don’t support Springbok. I don’t support the Emblem and the apartheid colours that the National Team wears. We want the colours that represent democracy. Mabokoboko, Die Bokke, Springbok – IS AN APARTHEID SYMBOL .”

Other politicians have also made strange comments

Last week, Fikile Mbalula believes he is the reason why Siya Kolisi was appointed as Springboks captain under Rassie Erasmus’ reign as head coach.

Over the last few days, many social media users have credited Erasmus his exceptional dedication and commitment to transformation with the Springbok team.

But on Wednesday, Mbalula took exception to one such viewpoint and openly challenged it.

“Those who followed rugby will know the struggles black players faced, being called qouta players. But arrival of Rassie Erasmus made sure that if you are good enough you get selected regardless of the colour of your skin. He deserves all the recognition,” wrote X / Twitter user @Tabile_Zukile.

Mbalula, who was Minister of Sport (2010-2017), Minister of Police (2017-2018) and Minister of Transport 2019-2023) and currently serves as ANC Secretary General, responded with the following message:

“Its not Rassie who did away with quotas its me bcos they were counter productive,We entrenched the transformation charter hence u see Siya been the captain. But i understand your point and fully agree about your assertion about Rassie.”
