The Sharks rugby franchise made a significant statement today, announcing a long-term contract extension for their star Springbok scrumhalf, Grant Williams. The deal will keep him at Kings Park through the 2027 World Cup cycle, ensuring the Sharks retain the playmaking spark that drives their attack.

Additionally, a trio of rising forwards pledged their commitment to Durban, strengthening the team’s foundation for years to come.

Williams: From College Rovers to Springbok

Williams’ path to becoming a South African rugby mainstay started in Paarl, but his journey blossomed upon joining Durban’s College Rovers club. He swiftly ascended to Super Rugby, making his Sharks debut in 2018. Fifty-four first-class appearances and 19 tries later, Williams is a genuine attacking dynamo for the Sharks.

His electrifying pace and ability to spot gaps in the defence didn’t go unnoticed by the Springboks coaching staff. Williams earned his first Test cap in 2022, followed by a crucial role on the 2023 World Cup-winning squad.

He brings international experience and a winning mentality back to the Sharks, where he teams up with fellow Springbok scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse to form a world-class pairing at the position.

Sharks Fortify the Pack

The Sharks weren’t just focused on their backline. The franchise understands that success starts upfront, and they acted accordingly. Lock Emile van Heerden and tighthead prop Hanro Jacobs, both just 23 years old, have signed on until 2027. These moves showcase the Sharks’ emphasis on securing young players with immense potential.

Additionally, a potent force at hooker, 24-year-old Fez Mbatha, has extended his Sharks stay through 2026. Mbatha’s dynamic playstyle brings excitement to the forward pack.

Long-Term Vision for Durban

These moves reveal the Sharks’ clear ambition – to build a team capable of sustained success based on exceptional talent identification and development. Fans in Durban are buzzing with the possibilities as their Sharks charge towards a bright future.
