Introducing the new Springboks ‘Bomb Squad’. This is very different to the originals with only two players set to be retained.

The original ‘Bomb squad’ consisted of Malcolm Marx, Steven Kitshoff, Vincent Koch, RG Snyman, Franco Mostert, Francois Louw.

Now, Marx and Kitshoff have been promoted to the starting line-up. Furthermore, one of Snyman or Mostert could start with Lood de Jager ruled out with a chest related illness. Finally, Louw hang up his boots but his replacement/s depending on the 6-2 or 7-1 split) have stepped up with aplomb.

INTRODUCING THE SPRINGBOKS’ NEW BOMB SQUAD

This time around, Bongi Mbonambi looks set to wear the number 16 jersey at the Rugby World Cup with Marx in fine form.

Then, it Ox Nche will step up with either Koch or Trevor Nyakane. Given his recent experience and continuity in selection, I expect Koch to wear the number 18 jersey. Therefore, retaining his role in the Bomb Squad.

The other man retaining his place could be Mostert or RG Snyman (depending on who Nienaber selects to start at 5).

Finally, Kwagga Smith has stepped in with passion for Louw, offering diversity in the forwards pack. If the Boks opt for a 7-1 split then we could see Jean Kleyn, Marco van Staden or Jasper Wiese added to the bench. If they opt for a 6-2 split then we expect a scrumhalf replacement in Cobus Reinach, Jaden Hendrikse or Grant Williams and probably Damien Willemse.

NEW-LOOK BOMB SQUAD:

  • 16) Bongi Mbonambi
  • 17) Ox Nche
  • 18) Vincent Koch/Trevor Nyakane
  • 19) RG Snyman/Franco Mostert
  • 20) Kwagga Smith
  • 21) Marco van Staden/ Jasper Wiese
As mentioned, another forward could be added if the Boks avert to a 7-1 split. In this case, Kleyn could step up. The remaining Bok bench will likely consist of a scrumhalf and Willemse with the possibility of another back if we opt for a 5-3 split.

REMAINING SUBSTITUTES:

  • 21) Cobus Reinach/ Jaden Hendrikse/ Grant Williams
  • 22) Kurt-lee Arendse/Mapimpi or Esterhuizen/Moodie
  • 23) Damien Willemse
