Sanele Nohamba is no stranger to the Springboks spotlight. His electric form, particularly since switching positions to flyhalf, has reignited his chances with the national team. This dynamic Lions utility back is one of five Lions invited to the Springbok alignment camp, a testament to his recent rise.

This camp offers Nohamba another chance to make a lasting impression on coach Rassie Erasmus. While the 2021 British and Irish Lions Tour didn’t result in his Springbok debut, he gained invaluable experience playing for South Africa A, a stepping stone on his international rugby journey.

Nohamba’s Resurgence at the Lions

Nohamba’s move from the Sharks to the Lions in May 2022 proved a turning point. “It is a huge honor to be back in the Springbok squad again,” he beamed. “I am looking forward to the alignment camp… Just excited really.”

Now, Nohamba’s primary goal is to absorb the Springboks’ systems and adapt his game accordingly. His versatility is a major asset – dazzling sidesteps, accurate kicks, and blistering pace are all part of his arsenal.

He credits kicking consultant Morné Steyn for his technical development: “He has been great for me…giving me an insight into what to look for.”

Dedication and Enjoyment

Nohamba’s attacking style flourishes within the Lions’ supportive environment. The simple joy of playing has fueled his on-field performances: “The last couple of months at the Sharks I didn’t play as much. The more you enjoy it, the better you play.”

While his commitment to the Lions is unwavering, Springboks selection remains his ultimate ambition. “Playing well here gives me a chance to get inclusion with the Springboks… If I keep on improving…I will put my best foot forward to be up for selection.”
