On Sunday night, the Springboks’ highly anticipated documentary Chasing the Sun 2 aired its first episode in a five-part series that will showcase the team’s journey to the 2023 World Cup title.

In an incredibly powerful opening scene, the first episode provided a glimpse into a crucial moment during the Springboks’ progression through a challenging semi-final against England.

Despite the fact that the Springboks came into that game as heavy favourites, they trailed 12-6 at half-time, with England having been able to dictate and dominate key facets of play in wet weather conditions.

The clip from Chasing the Sun 2 provides incredible “fly on the wall” insight into the Springboks’ changing room at half-time.

Erasmus stands angrily in the midst of a group of silent players. He reminds the players how they had promised to play as if this could be their last game together as a group, slamming them for failing to live up to this expectation.

“You promised me! You lied to me!” he yells at the players. “You’re a f****g liar!”

It’s an incredible moment that reveals how fired up Erasmus was, but also what was needed to get the players to bounce back as they eventually went on to stage an incredible comeback, and claim a thrilling one-point win.

The five-part documentary series, which premiered on 24 March 2024 on M-Net and SuperSport Grandstand – channel 201 – will air its next episode on 31 March.

If the first episode is anything to go by, there are sure to be numerous more fascinating revelations throughout the documentary series.

“This story is bigger than rugby. It is a reflection of what it means to be South African. It’s a story of hope, unity, and resilience that connects deeply with our nation’s spirit. The decision to feature Chasing the Sun 2 in M-Net’s prestigious movie slot affirms our belief in the power of this story to inspire and unite,” said Marc Jury, the CEO of MultiChoice South Africa.

Rendani Ramovha, the CEO of SuperSport, added, “The Springboks are not just a team; they are a source of national pride and inspiration. Their journey and achievements reflect the strong spirit that exists within us – a spirit of unity, togetherness and overcoming great odds. Through Chasing the Sun 2, we hope to relive those stirring moments and come together as we did during the tournament in France.”

The documentary series is the accumulation of over 56 shoot days, interviews with more than 30 players and coaches, insights from pundits and media figures, and combining over 60 hours of interview footage with 30-plus hours of match footage.

Chasing the Sun 2 is a co-production between SuperSport and SA Rugby, and will be available exclusively on DStv Premium.
