Jordan Hendrikse, the rising star of South African rugby, has his sights firmly set on representing his country at the highest level. The talented flyhalf has earned an invite to the Springbok alignment camp, a significant step on his path towards World Cup selection.

Hendrikse Seeks Pressure-Handling Wisdom

Hendrikse yearns to understand how veteran Springbok Handre Pollard, known for his composure under pressure, manages the immense expectations that come with playing for the world champions.

“I would start by asking what are the toughest lessons he has learnt?” Hendrikse mused. “Overcoming pressure… that’s something he has been doing well for the Boks.”

Adapting to Changing Roles

Despite finding himself in a substitute role with the Lions this season, Hendrikse remains focused. While his inclusion in the Springbok camp might be surprising given his limited game time, he’s no stranger to overcoming setbacks. A serious injury and a tentative start to the season appear to be behind him.

His recent performances coming off the bench have showcased flashes of his brilliance. Many believe his 20-minute cameo against the Bulls brought some much-needed attacking direction to the Lions’ game.

Maturity and Versatility

Hendrikse understands that the journey to the Springbok jersey sometimes requires patience. “It is a lot different from starting,” he admits. “You need to be a diverse player… I am here to serve the team. I am a dynamic player that can play anywhere.”

National Ambitions Amid Uncertain Future

Hendrikse’s immediate club future may lie with the Sharks rather than the Lions, but his focus now is on making the most of his Springbok opportunity. With the Lions struggling in 11th place in the United Rugby Championship (URC), success in this weekend’s crucial clash against the Sharks at Ellis Park would reignite their season.

A Springbok in the Making?

Jordan Hendrikse’s talent and determination have caught the attention of national selectors. Should he continue to impress and prove his ability to handle pressure, that coveted Springbok jersey may soon be his.
