Former Springbok lock Hannes Strydom tragically died in a car accident on Sunday evening at the age of 58.

Strydom, who was born on 13 July 1965, played in 21 Tests and 10 non-Tests between 1993 and 1997.

He helped the Springboks lift the Webb Ellis Cup for the first time in 1995 when Mzansi hosted the Rugby World Cup.

After his playing days, Hannes Strydom was a successful businessman who owned a chain of pharmacies.

He is the fifth member of the 1995 Springbok squad to have passed away, after Ruben Kruger, Joost van der Westhuizen, Chester Williams and James Small.

Kruger died in 2010 aged just 39, while Van der Westhuizen passed away in 2017 aged 45.

Wingers Williams and Small both died in 2019, aged 49 and 50, respectively.

In addition, Kitch Christie, coach of the 1995 Springboks, has also passed away.

Christie died in 1998 at the age of 58.
