And on Monday, the Lions expressed their devastation at the loss of Hannes Strydom’s life and sent their condolences to his loved ones in a short statement.

“It is with great sadness to have heard of the passing of our very own Lions and Springbok legend Hannes Strydom. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this time. May his soul rest in peace.”

Lions Rugby Company CEO and one of Strydom’s 1995 Springbok teammates, Rudolf Straeuli, confirmed the sad news and expressed his condolences, on behalf of the franchise to the family of the fallen hero.

“We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Hannes”, said Straeuli. “We share a tight bond as members of the 1995 group and to lose yet another one of our brothers is a big blow.”

“Our sincere condolences go out to his family, friends and the rugby fraternity at large,” he concluded.

Strydom played 21 Tests for the Springboks and represented Transvaal – where he formed a formidable lock combination with fellow World Cup winner Kobus Wiese. The second rower also captained the Lions team that hoisted the Currie Cup trophy in 1999.
