Government not ‘committed’ to handing bonuses to Springboks?

Having successfully defended the Web Ellis trophy, many were expecting the Springboks to be generously rewarded by the South African government for their heroics.

According to TimesLive, SA Rugby president Mark Alexander said that World Rugby does not give prize money to teams winning the tournament.

“There is no prize money from World Rugby – players play for the trophy.”

“However, we have win bonuses that were planned for four years in advance – the players are taken care by that,” said Alexander during the Springboks’ arrival at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday.

Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Zizi Kodwa said was tight-lipped on the issue of players getting money from the government.

“Let’s not compare apples to bananas. You can see how structured and organised SA Rugby is. The issue of bonuses was not resolved on the eve or doorstep of the tournament.

“It was way before that and other federations can only get inspiration. That kind of leadership is required by other federations where you don’t have to deal with issues on the door of the tournament because it may affect the performance of the playersm” said Kodwa.
