Veteran Springbok centre Lukhanyo Am captained a losing side against the Bulls on Saturday but not without making a statement or two.

With a host of World-Cup winning Springbok returnees in both sides, the Bulls demolished the Sharks 44-10 in their United Rugby Championship derby on Saturday.

What was billed as one of the matches of the season, turned out to be a one-sided affair where the Bulls ran in six tries to one at a swelteringly hot Loftus Versfeld.

The Bulls have now firmly entrenched themselves as the top SA side thus far in the competition, while the Sharks have lost six out of seven matches this season.

Lukhanyo Am vs Canan Moodie

Nonetheless, there were some tasty one-on-one battles, not least the match up between Springbok outside centres Lukhanyo Am and Canan Moodie (who played on the wing on Saturday.)

Moodie got more game time than Lukhanyo Am during the 2023 Rugby World Cup, so it was only fitting that the Sharks skipper reminded the 21-year-old that his Springbok jersey isn’t safe. Watch:

The Bulls’ pack dominated the Sharks pack on the day, while the Durban side struggled against the Bulls’ rush defense, despite showing signs of progress with their new approach.

Tries by Stedman Gans and Akker van der Merwe contributed to a 31-3 lead at halftime.

More tasty home derbies

The Sharks managed a penalty try early in the second half, but hopes of a comeback were dashed by the free-flowing Bulls who added a further two tries to seal an emphatic victory.

The next fixture for both sides will be against the Stormers in Cape Town towards the end of December.
