The Boks began their end-of-year tour with a hard-fought win over Wales in Cardiff on Saturday, ultimately needing a late try to Malcolm Marx to salvage the result.

However, the Boks could very well have been left to lament another controversial officiating decision after a would-be try to Makazole Mapimpi was ruled out on a marginal technicality.

The video below dissects why the try should not have been disallowed:

Referee Paul Williams was generally seen to have had a decent game, but there were questions particularly asked in the first half around why Wales were not penalised for disrupting the Springboks’ lineout mauls by playing opponents in the air.

However, there would be no complaints from Bok captain Siya Kolisi after the match.

“We just focus on what we need to do and we understand that match officials have a tough job,” Kolisi said.

“I don’t think there’s scope to look at what the ref did or didn’t do from this game, but we need to look at the things we could control.

“I can’t be talking about what the ref did right or wrong in this game.”

Bok coach Jacques Nienaber simply praised the starting pack for stamping their authority early on.

“It’s also important to never forget the ‘slow poison’ the starting players put into their opposition’s legs earlier in the game.

“We may not have gotten the reward from our drives in the first half, but I think the pack laid a great foundation, which opened up the opportunity for the guys that came on. They still had to use that and kick on, and I thought they did that very well today.”
