Ireland’s relentless march towards consecutive Six Nations Grand Slam titles has propelled them to the top of the world rankings. This impressive feat has ignited a fiery debate: are they truly the best rugby nation on the planet?

The Celtic nations of Ireland and Wales fervently champion their cause. Yet, rugby icons from other nations question the legitimacy of this claim.

Celtic Pride vs. Scepticism

On the South African rugby show Boks Office, Springbok legends expressed a healthy dose of scepticism about Ireland’s “world’s best” status. Former captain Victor Matfield’s pointed question, “What have they won?”, highlighted Ireland’s persistent struggles to advance beyond the World Cup quarterfinals – a stark contrast to their Six Nations supremacy.

Is Ireland the Best? The Opposition Factor

Jean de Villiers, another Springbok great, acknowledged Ireland’s dominance. However, he cautioned that the Six Nations may not provide the ultimate measuring stick.

“It’s a big statement,” he said, “considering the opposition.” Former Bok and analyst Robbie Fleck was more direct. He asserted that Ireland’s success stems, in part, from facing weaker competition in the tournament.

Fleck’s Analysis: Six Nations Lacks Luster

Fleck expressed his disappointment with the 2024 Six Nations, describing it as a “one-horse race” with Ireland firmly in the lead. “Not much, actually,” was his frank response when asked about his overall impression.

He lamented the underperformance of traditional giants England and France. “You need the traditional guys to be strong for a truly compelling tournament,” he explained.

While crediting Scotland with moments of brilliance, propelled by stars like Finn Russell and Duhan van der Merwe, Fleck ultimately sees Ireland cruising to victory without serious challengers. “There’s no real competition for Ireland,” he declared. “This has been quite frustrating and disappointing, to be honest.”

The True Test: Ireland vs. South Africa

Rugby experts agree that Ireland’s world ranking claims hinge heavily on their upcoming July Test series against reigning world champions, South Africa. “They can’t be [the best] because they’re not playing against quality opposition,” Fleck argues, emphasizing the need for Ireland to prove themselves on a bigger stage.

Schalk Burger, echoing this sentiment, believes the South Africa series will be the ultimate litmus test. “That will be a proper Test [series] for both teams,” he asserted. “The proper Test is coming down here [in South Africa]. This will be proper.” The rugby world waits with bated breath. Will Ireland’s Six Nations brilliance translate against the might of the Springboks?
