Springboks can handle the heat – Mbonambi

Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi has no fear regarding the country’s huge expectations heading into a thrilling international season.

Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi has no fear regarding the country’s huge expectations heading into a thrilling international season.

With the team entering the international extravaganza as the defending champions and the excitement building for the global showpiece, expectations are high, but Mbonambi said it was something the side embraced.

Mbonambi happy to deal with Springboks fans expectations

“South African rugby fans don’t only have expectations on us in a World Cup year, it’s the same for every game we play,” said Mbonambi. “We feel the expectations, but we don’t see it as pressure, we see it as an honour and a privilege.

“Of course, we feel nervous, but we are also excited. We love it and enjoy it.”

Commenting on the team’s preparations this year compared to the 2019 when they lifted the Webb Ellis Cup in Japan, Mbonambi said: “Four years ago was a completely different story. We were a bunch of new players coming together with a new coaching team and fresh plans, so it took longer to prepare and become aligned.

“This season we are finding our rhythm and aligning quicker, as we have known one another for four years longer, and we know what the coaches expect from us.

“As players we also know what to expect from each other and we are working harder because we can’t do what we did four years ago and expect the same result.

“We are currently putting our plans in place, and the alignment camps certainly helped in that regard. We are a big group, so everyone is being coached well in terms of our plans.”

The first Rugby Championship game is nearing and we have a good idea of what the Springboks starting XV will look like against the Wallabies.

EXPECTED SPRINGBOKS LINEUP

15 Willie le Roux, 14 Canan Moodie, 13 Lukhanyo Am, 12 André Esterhuizen, 11 Makazole Mapimpi, 10 Manie Libbok, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Duane Vermeulen (captain), 7 Franco Mostert, 6 Deon Fourie, 5 Marvin Orie, 4 RG Snyman, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Bongi Mbonambi and 1 Ox Nché.

According to Sunday newspaper Rapport, the likes of Willie le Roux, Lukhanyo Am, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Duane Vermeulen and Bongi Mbonambi will form the spine of the team.

Meanwhile, fully-fit Manie Libbok will reportedly start alongside Cobus Reinach at halfback, while Kurt-Lee Arendse and Canan Moodie will be on the wings.

The Springboks will play three Tests in the abbreviated version of the Rugby Championship, starting with a clash against Australia, which takes place next weekend.

This will be followed by battles against New Zealand at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland (Saturday 15 July) and Argentina at Emirates Airline Park in Johannesburg (Saturday 29 July).

The team will then play three Rugby World Cup warm-up games – against Argentina in Buenos Aires (5 August), Wales in Cardiff (19 August) and New Zealand in London (25 August) before travelling to Corsica for a one-week camp en route to Toulon for their opening Rugby World Cup fixture against Scotland on Sunday 10 September.
