Blitzboks come up short against Fiji in Cup quarters

The Blitzboks were bundled out of contention for the Cup title after suffering an agonising two-point loss against Fiji on Saturday.

The Blitzboks were knocked out of the Perth Sevens by their arch rivals Fiji, who clinched a riveting 14-12 win over South Africa on Saturday afternoon.

Fresh off the back of a pool stage loss to Argentina earlier in the day, the Blitzboks had it all to do in their crunch quarter-final against the Flying Fijians and ultimately failed in their quest.

Very little separated the two sides in terms of performance, with both sides crossing for two tries. However, the Blitzboks could only convert one of their tries, while Fiji were successful with both conversions.

A sustained attack by the Blitzboks saw Ryan Oosthuizen finally cross the whitewash, but his five-pointer was quickly wiped off when Fiji bagged a converted try to take the lead.

Hot-stepping newbie Tristan Leyds then danced through the heart of the Fiji defence for a dazzling try as the Blitzboks regained the lead. But it would be Fiji who had the final say as they scored again to take was proved to be an unassailable lead.
