Blitzboks beat Samoa in Dubai Sevens opener

The Blitzboks kicked off the defence of their Dubai Sevens title with victory over Samoa at the Sevens Stadium on Saturday.

The Blitzboks kicked off the defence of their Dubai Sevens title with victory over Samoa at the Sevens Stadium on Saturday.

After leading 17-7 at half time, the South African Sevens side went on to score four tries and Justin Geduld kicked two conversions in a 22-14 win over their Pool A rivals.

First half tries from Christie Grobbelaar, Rosko Specman and Shilton van Wyk laid the platform for the Blitzboks’ win after Faafoi Falaniko scored the opening minute for Samoa.

Taunuu Niulevaea struck first after the restart, but Impi Visser replied three minutes later as Philip Snyman’s charges held on to give the Blitzboks a morale-boosting victory.

The Blitzboks will next face Canada at 12.58 (SA time).

Canada narrowly lost their opening pool match 26-21 against New Zealand.

The Blitzboks and All Blacks will clash at 18:44 (SA time).
