In a season of near miraculous results and fairytale victories, Wynberg became the latest underdog team to claim a big scalp when they edged Paarl Boys’ High in a tense schools rugby affair.

Wynberg ended a 36-year drought against Paarl Boys’ High with a last-gasp penalty to cause what was the biggest upset of the week and arguably on of the biggest the season on Saturday.

With the scores deadlocked at 27-27, Wynberg was presented with a golden opportunity to get a first schools rugby win over Paarl Boys’ since 1988 and they took it with both hands.

When Paarl Boys’ was pinged at the death, flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed stepped up and calmly slotted match-deciding — and potentially a season-determining — penalty with the final act of play to give Wynberg a historic 30-27 victory in Paarl and just their second-ever triumph over Boishaai.

In the second premier schools rugby match of the week, Paarl Gymnasium held on to beat hosts Affies 20-19 in a thrilling encounter in Pretoria.

A brace from wing Immanuel Prinsloo, along with 10 points from the boot of fullback Freek de Koch, gave Paarl Gym enough of a buffer to see out their fourth win in the last five games against Affies.

Wing Eagan Roux scored Affies’ only try of the match, with the remaining points coming from flyhalf Ruben Pienaar, who kicked a conversion and four penalties.

Meanwhile, Outeniqua felt the wrath of a wounded Grey College after their shock defeat to Jeppe a few weeks ago. Grey College marked their return to the local schools rugby scene with a 90-3 demolition of Outeniqua.

In other schools rugby results from around the country, Pretoria’s Waterkloof ended Boksburg’s EG Jansen’s unbeaten start to the schools rugby campaign to an end with an entertaining 45-38 win.

In the Eastern Cape, Dale and Queen’s College warmed up for their derby next weekend with respective wins against Grey High (33-25) and Selborne College (26-21).

In KwaZulu-Natal, unbeaten Northwood played to a 7-7 draw with Durban High, while Maritzburg College beat Pretoria Boys 43-7.
