Scotland to be forced to reduce South African contingent in RWC squad?

Scotland could be heading to the Rugby World Cup with one less South African in their squad than originally planned.

Scotland might have to lower the number of South Africans in their squad for the Rugby World Cup in the wake of what had happened in Saturday’s Test against France in Saint-Etienne.

Scotland have a quartet South African-born players in their Test set-up and all four are likely to feature for their adopted nation at the Rugby World Cup, if they gain selection in the 33-man squad.

The players are wings Duhan van der Merwe and Kyle Steyn and props WP Nel and Pierre Schoeman.

But one of those players — van der Merwe — faces an anxious wait to see if he’ll be available for Rugby World Cup selection after suffering an untimely injury in Scotland’s warm-up Test against France on Saturday.

The bulky winger was forced off the field in the final-quarter of the thrilling clash and while no prognosis has been made, van der Merwe will be send for scans to determine the extent of the injury in the coming days.

Scotland will start their Rugby World Cup campaign with a clash against the Springboks on 10 September.
