Two rugby matches involving teams from South Western Districts scheduled for this weekend have been cancelled due to positive COVID tests in the SWD teams, and with player welfare in mind.

SWD rugby matches hit by COVID-19 cancellations

The Carling Currie Cup First Division match between the Eagles and Down Touch Griffons, scheduled for 17:00 in George on Friday, is off. The score will be recorded as 0-0 and the Griffons will receive four log points, in line with competition rules.

The Women’s First Division Group 1 match between SWD and the Free State was scheduled for 14:00 on Saturday, and has also been cancelled. The score will be recorded as 0-0 and the Free State Women will receive four log points, in line with competition rules.

There have been COVID-19 positives in the Springbok camp but the Test match against Georgia in Pretoria on Friday night will go ahead as planned.

The Carling Currie Cup First Division match between the Leopards and SWD Eagles, scheduled for Potchefstroom on Saturday 26 June, had also been cancelled in line with COVID-19 protocols. That decision was prompted by positive tests in the SWD Eagles team and with specific consideration given to player welfare. As determined by the competition rules, the Leopards will be awarded four log points because of the cancellation and the result will be noted as 0-0.

“SA Rugby and all the unions agreed that while it’s unfortunate, the safety of our players and officials comes first,” said Jurie Roux, CEO of SA Rugby.

“It’s clear from the documentation received that both teams followed the agreed protocols, but the SWD Eagles have informed us that they are unable to field a team for player welfare reasons. As the Leopards are able to play, they will be awarded four log points.”
