With Pollard sidelined and no true flyhalf backup in sight, South African fans must place their trust in Libbok, for he is undoubtedly the real deal.

MANIE’S RESUME

Immanuel “Manie” Libbok was a journeyman, playing second fiddle during his time at the Bulls and later at the Sharks. However, his fortunes took a transformative turn under the guidance of John Dobson at the Stormers, where he solidified his position at fly half and eventually earned a call-up to the Springboks. Libbok’s evolution into a playmaker of champion quality was prominently demonstrated during the inaugural United Rugby Championship, which saw the Stormers emerge victorious. Since then, he has earned 7 call-ups to the Bok squad, contributing to notable wins against Los Pumas and the Wallabies.

THE BACKUP OPTIONS

Libbok is the only true 10 in the team, however there are players littered across the board who have experience playing fly half and could step up if Libbok goes down.

CHESLIN KIOLBE

No stranger to flyhalf, has played a few times in the 10 jumper throughout his career and has even run out as flyhalf during his tenure in France. Notably, he can also kick for poles when the situation calls.

WILLIE LE ROUX

Le Roux frequently operates as the second first receiver during Bok games and has the potential to slide into the fly half position, a role he often takes on for the Springboks.

DAMIAN WILLEMSE

Routed as the backup flyhalf. Damian Willemse has played 10 numerous times for the Boks, Stormers and during his time at school for Paul Roos.

SCRUMHALF CONTINGENCY

In addition to the fly half options, scrum halves Faf de Klerk, Jaden Hendrikse, and Grant Williams possess the versatility to transition to the pivot role when circumstances require. The depth of options provides a safety net, with Faf also offering a kicking alternative.

NIENABER ON POLLARD’S SELECTION

Springbok Head Coach Jacques Nienaber has cleared things up about Pollard’s absence, assuring fans that while Pollard is fit, he isn’t at full capacity to contribute effectively for the team. Nienaber emphasised the importance of avoiding the risk of reinjury by rushing Pollard back into action. Instead, the coaching staff has placed their trust in Libbok and Willemse to handle the crucial fly half role.

Nienaber shut down speculation that one of the four scrum halves in the squad would make way for Pollard’s return.

MANIE IS THE REAL DEAL

Libbok has shown he’s truly one of the best attacking fly halves in world rugby. His kicking ability to drop pinpoint cross kicks, coupled with a stunning offload game, magnificent pass and audacious step makes him a potent weapon in the Springbok coaching arsenal. Though his goal-kicking was a bit shaky when he joined the Stormers he’s steadily grown better over time – and we can expect the same upward curve with more time in the Bok jersey. Libbok is the real deal and Bok fans need to back him.

EXCITING BOK OUTSIDE BACKS

The Boks are graced with some of the most exhilarating outside backs in the world, featuring the talents of Moodie, Mapimpi, Kolbe, Arendse, Willemse, and le Roux. In this landscape of excitement, Libbok’s strategic prowess is poised to unlock their full potential and create ample space for these electrifying and dangerous backs to wreak havoc on the field.

Libbok does not fit the mould of fly halves-of-springboks-past like Morne Steyn and Handre Pollard. Libbok injects a fresh burst of energy into the Bok jersey with his unique flair.  An incredibly thrilling player to watch, he adds an exciting edge to the game and possesses a winning mentality. As the Rugby World Cup beckons, Bok fans need to put their faith in their number 10 —In Manie We Trust.
