Serfontein, who joined Montpellier from the Bulls in 2017 (the year he last featured in the Bok setup), has racked up more than 80 appearances for the Top 14 outfit and remains an integral member of their squad.

At a time when Montpellier has seemingly been intent on releasing several ‘overseas’ players, Serfontein has retained the faith of the club.

The 28-year-old last played for the Springboks in 2017, and many felt he could come back into the national reckoning last year, but he has remained in the international wilderness.

Serfontein, who does have 35 Test caps to his name, told Montpellier’s official website: “I’m happy to continue my career with the club until 2024.

“I wanted to continue to be part of this team and it feels great playing here with this group [of players].”

Montpellier coach Philippe Saint-André welcomed the decision from the Bok centre

“Jan is an important player in our system,” he said. “He is one of the leaders in our team, and has already captained the team this season against Perpignan.

“I am delighted that he is continuing with us.”
