EXCLUSIVE: Phiwe Nomlomo resigns from the Sharks with immediate effect

The South African News has learnt from sources close to Kicking and Exits coach Phiwe Nomlomo that he has resigned from the Sharks with immediate effect.

The South African News has learnt from sources close to Kicking and Exits coach Phiwe Nomlomo that he has resigned from the Sharks with immediate effect.

Nomlomo’s resignation from the Sharks kicked into effect at the beginning of the month of August, and it comes due to family reasons.

Nomlomo was roped into the Sharks structures in 2020, following several years of impressive results as the head coach of East London school all-boys school, Selborne College. There, he was at the forefront of two very powerful first-team rugby sides in 2018 as well as 2019. He was also involved in the Border Craven Week coaching structures before receiving the honour of being appointed SA Schools ‘A’ coach in 2019.

There, his team featured junior stars such as SA U20 and Lions flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse and another young flyhalf in Sihlalo Benge, who moved from the Lions to the Sharks late last year. Plenty more of his Selborne products can be seen scattered across different academies and Currie Cup sides, with the likes of Jarrod Taylor, Mnombo Zwelendaba and Thomas Bursey getting their chance at the Western Province Currie Cup set up. While at the Sharks, Nomlomo worked mainly with the United Rugby Championship side and was also involved in their new structure under the recently reappointed New Zealander coach John Plumtree

Having initially been appointed as the Skills coach, Nomlomo was set to shift his responsibilities to the Sharks ‘kicking and exits’ coach for the upcoming season. This was not the first involvement he had with the Durban-based side, having spent some time in their academy after matriculating at Selborne before injuries forced him to return to his native Border region in the Eastern Cape. 

Nomlomo plotting his next move after Sharks exit

Nomlomo was also previously head of the academy at Eastern Province Kings in 2016. His sudden departure from the Sharks will come as a shock to many, who will now wait with bated breath to see what is next for the career of the talented coach, with sources remaining tightlipped for now.
